Hummingbirds (Trochilidae family) are small american birds with average length 3.5-4 inches (10-12cm) and weight 4-6g. The smallest bird in the world is the Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) weighing only 1.8 gramm. Hummingbirds are well known because of their size and ability to hover in the air by rapidly flapping their wings, up to 80 times per second. The hummers are the only birds known to fly backward. There are about 320-340 species of hummingbirds in the world.
Did you know that
To defend its territory Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) will attack many birds, even large hawks. Rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) has similar aggressive behavior in addition to its curiosity: highly attracted to the color red (like most hummingbirds) it often examines humans, books, magazines etc. The smallest bird in USA, Calliope hummingbird Stellula calliope, prefer to make nests in the mountains and incubate eggs in the extreme cold. Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) eat more insects and spiders than other hummers and their population is increasing thanks to these birds ability to adapt in suburban habitat. Broad-tailed hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus) nests on the same tree branch or even built a new nest atop of old one year after year (so called philopatry - faithfulness to the home area).
