Scientific Classification: Aves - Falconiformes - Pandionidae - Pandion haliaetus
Osprey, also known as Fish hawk, is the only diurnal bird of prey that feeds on live fish only. Osprey is a large raptor with wingspan up to 72 inches (1.8m), and females are bigger than males. Ospreys are monogamous, they usually mate for life. To catch fish they dive into water from 10-30 meters above surface, and their large curved claws help ospreys to carry a large fish a considerable distance. In flight ospreys usually point fish head forward to decrease wind resistance. |
